Practicing Intersectional Allyship for Pride Month and Juneteenthv
Each June, Pride Month recognizes and celebrates LGBTQ+ people around the world. It also recalls the 1969 Stonewall uprising and is an opportunity to raise awareness of issues still facing this community. On June 19, Pride month intersects with Juneteenth—a day that recognizes the end of slavery in the United States and emphasizes education and achievement among Black Americans.
Throughout history, the Black community and the LGBTQ+ communities have worked hand-in-hand towards collective liberation. The courage and determination of LGBTQ persons of color helped galvanize the LGBTQ+ community and paved the way for future activism. Without decades of effective coalition-building and community organizing among minority groups, progress would not have been possible.
Intersectional allyship is a concept that recognizes and addresses the intersecting forms of oppression and discrimination faced by individuals who belong to multiple marginalized groups. It involves actively supporting and advocating for individuals who experience overlapping systems of disadvantage based on their race, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic status, disability, or other aspects of their identity.
This month and moving forward, advocates and allies in the workplace should make a conscious effort to learn about issues concerning minority communities through an intersectional lens. Only then can we as a society truly attempt to liberate marginalized communities.
