Learning and Development in the Post-Pandemic Era
Learning and Development (L&D) has always been an important Human Resources (HR) function, but it is fast becoming even more critical as organizations deal with ongoing challenges and uncertainties, as well as the emergence of new technologies like AI that require re-skilling and cross-training of many employees.
In addition, the effects of the pandemic and the rise of the younger generations in the workforce have led to more difficulty in engaging employees and shorter attention spans. Meanwhile, the costs of non-compliance and the impacts of the well-known “Forgetfulness Curve” are magnified in a rapidly changing business world. Data from recent studies are consistent, showing that 83% of managers believe that training is a key factor in attracting talent, and many employees (48%) say that the extent of training opportunities was an important factor in choosing their current employer.
Given the above, it’s no surprise that millions of dollars are spent on L&D programs each year. However, it’s always a challenge for HR departments to show the ROI of their L&D programs. The Kirkpatrick Model widely used by organizations to systematically evaluate and improve their L&D initiatives is based on a hierarchical framework. Levels 1 and 2 focus on individual reactions and learning outcomes, which are fairly easy to measure. The higher levels (3 and 4) provide more comprehensive assessments of a program's overall impact on both individual performance and organizational goals but have proven harder to implement.
