Are you Benefiting from Generational Diversity?
Each May, we commemorate Older Americans Month (OAM) to encourage and recognize the countless contributions that older adults make to our communities. Their time, experience, and talents enrich the lives of those around them. The 2023 theme is Aging Unbound, which offers an opportunity to explore diverse aging experiences and discuss how communities can combat stereotypes.
As of 2020, four generations are working together in the United States: Baby Boomers, Gen Xers, Millennials, and Gen Zers. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, workers aged 55 and older are the fastest-growing age group in the labor force. In today's workforce, it's common to see employees from multiple generations working together. As the workforce becomes more diverse, multi-generational teams are becoming increasingly common. This presents both challenges and opportunities for organizations.
Multi-generational conflict in the workplace can arise when employees from different age groups have different perspectives, values, and communication styles. The impact of multi-generational conflict can be significant, including reduced productivity, increased turnover, and decreased job satisfaction. According to a survey by AARP, 64% of workers aged 45 and older have seen or experienced age discrimination in the workplace. Additionally, a survey by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) found that 41% of workers aged 55 and older believe that age has been a factor in job loss or difficulty finding a new job.
