2023: Year of the Woman?

National Women’s Day was first celebrated in New York City by the Socialist Party of America in 1909. Today the US celebrates a whole month designated as Women’s History Month, and International Women’s Day (IWD) is an official holiday in about 30 countries around the world, including Afghanistan, Cambodia, China (for women only), Cuba, Nepal, Russia, Uganda, Ukraine, Vietnam, and Zambia. While there are cultural differences, all the celebrations involve men honoring  their mothers, wives, girlfriends, female colleagues and friends with flowers and small gifts to show their appreciation for women and their accomplishments.

Meanwhile, women’s rights appear to be under attack around the world as they struggle for basic freedoms in countries like Iran, and fight for re-gaining rights that are being taken away like reproductive rights in the US. As a result, according to a new report from Moody Analytics, the global economy is missing out on $7 trillion a year. At the current rate, the World Economic Forum estimates that it will take 132 years to reach full gender parity.

Throughout history, the role of their male counterparts and allies has been pivotal in women’s struggles, as in the Russian Revolution which started with women’s protests in 1917. Since late last year, we have been witnessing the women of Iran, who have started a revolution with the slogan of "Zan, Zendegi, Azadi" (woman, life, freedom), gaining support from their husbands, brothers, fathers and sons, and also worldwide attention.

2023 promises to be the Year of the Woman with the struggles intensifying, but also opportunities emerging for a significant shift and accelerated path towards gender equity.
